Hurricane Ridge - going down
When I ride Hurrican Ridge, I always split the uphill out from the downhill. I love going down hill, but this wasn’t the time for racing back down the mountain.
Lisa went on the ride, and although she kicks butt going uphill, she doesn’t like coming down mountains - even driving a car. So for her to cycle down a mountain, with the first 8 miles fairly exposed, took a lot from her.
I decided that I would stay with Lisa for the first 8 miles, until we got out of the part with cliffs on the side. She rode her brakes a lot, but she did great and everyone got off the mountain okay. I ended up finishing in 45 minutes - it would have taken me closer to 30 minutes if I would have let myself go. No worries though, I got my PR going up, and I got my sweetie down safely coming down.

Cycling Hurricane Ridge - PR
Mark, Lisa, and I cycled up Hurricane Ridge, and I set a PR for myself - doing it in 3 hours and 21 seconds.
Mark and I might not have even gone on this ride if Lisa wasn’t there - she really wanted to go. We have been doing a great job this year of talking ourselves out of workouts. But with Lisa, we were going. So Mark and I decided to take it easy - and we ended up having our best time ever for this ride.
This was the sixth year in a row that I have done this ride. I actually was confused when we reached the top - I thought it came between 18 miles and 18.5 miles, but it actually comes between 17.5 and 18 miles. When I saw the last hairpin, I thought there was actually one more to go.
That turned out to be important, because we were 22 seconds away from finishing in under 3 hours. I know I could have easily gone 22 seconds faster if I had known I was that close to finishing under 3 hours, but I wasn’t paying attention because we weren’t trying to go fast.
I think my training is paying off. I have been more consistent training this year (but still can be a lot better). My focus on spinning better circles is leaving my legs more fresh at the end of rides, and my strategy for hydrating seems to really be working well.
But it could be that none of those mattered in the end. It could be that the three biggest reasons I’m riding faster on hills are (1) my weight, (2) my weight, and (3) how many pounds I am. Lance Armstrong is continually asked how to ride up hills faster and he always gives the same answer - Lose some weight!
Now that I’m done, and have seen the clock - those 22 seconds are haunting me. I may have to go up again later this year. . .
