I feel like I haven’t been doing any exercise this week. I am in danger on not getting in 120 miles of cycling this week.
Hoping to get a big ride in on Saturday.

Trail walk with Bo
Even though it’s going to be in the mid 80’s today, there was a chill in the air on this walk. Leaves are also starting to appear on the ground. I can tell summer is nearing the end.
Bo had a great time as usual. This was a pre-emptive strike to tire him out early. I am working at home today, and I don’t want to hear a bunch of heavy sighing going on in the background.

The Way I See It #245
“A person’s pursuit of goodness leads to greatness, but the pursuit of greatness lead to ruin. Pursue goodness and you will achieve great things.”
- John E. Kramer, Vice President for communications, Institute for Justice
In my experience this is so true. I have always been fascinated by how destructive it can be to pursue (and catch) fame. You look at Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, and most recently Britney Spears. All have been, or are in the process of being, destroyed by their fame. There is something about making “yourself” the focus of your life that leads to ruin (especially when mixed with lots of money).
Yet others handle fame and riches with ease. I believe it’s because fame and riches arn’t their ultimate goal, but a by-product. Pursue things like excellence and goodness, and if fame and money follow, it’s something they can handle. It works because the focus isn’t about just themselves.
I think this is one reason professional sports are becoming so difficult for many to support. It’t true for me. I love basketball. But I don’t watch it much anymore. The egos of the players are just too much for me to take. Other pro sports are struggling with the same issue.
Contrast that with all the people who participated in the Canada and Louisville Ironman events this weekend. I have been following many of their blogs as they shared their journey. They aren’t out there for fame or money. They have much purer motives - becoming the best they can be, or facing down their fears - to name a couple.
These athletes, many of them newly crowned Ironman finishers, demonstrate greatness to me. Today they will go back to their lives and jobs. There won’t be any fame or fortune for most of them. But they will carry with them the knowledge they overcame, and are now changed forever. That’s inspiring… That’s contagious…

Trail walk with Bo
Took Bo out for a walk in a light drizzle. He has a blast. I also like walking in the rain.
I was going to go for a bike long bike ride this weekend, but my legs feel anything but fresh. So I am going to be okay with an easy weekend.

My dog is annoying…
My dog has a new habit. It started around six months ago. I’ll be sitting around watching TV, or reading, or on the computer. He’ll be laying by my side. My trusty companion. Studies show that dogs decrease blood pressure. What could be better?
Not my dog. Bo always wants to play. It use to be that he would always pick up a tennis ball and drop it in my lap. Then he would sit and stare at me. Later he developed the habit of putting his head on my leg and looking pathetically at me. Somehow having a dog staring at you while you are trying to relax is, well, not that relaxing.
Bo also lies. One of us could have played with him or taken him on a walk. Yet later on, he’ll go to someone new and swear that no one has ever played with him before. He does the same thing with food. He always tells us that no one has feed him. Ever.
But that isn’t even his new habit. Evidently I have become callously immune to his pathetic stares. Now he is getting vocal. I’ll be sitting around and Bo will be at my feet. My faithful companion. Except that every few minutes he will let out this long audible sigh. Really loud. Like life is weary. Like he’s really bored, and it’s my fault. Not even throwing the ball helps in these situations. It’s a take me for a walk sigh.
This is a long way of saying that Lisa and I took Bo on a trail walk today. It was mostly to shut him up…

Putting up the White Flag
I am going to modify my goals after all. I am going to drop my pursuit of the accumulated elevation gain goal. For those who like math, I’m keeping goals 1-5 and dropping goal 7.
I have been on target the last four weeks to accomplish all the goals (including elevation gain). But it has some adverse consequences.
First, I have to schedule my cycling around doing rides that give me a lot of elevation. That takes away from my enjoyment. One of the things I want to accomplish the last few months of the year is to re-ignite my passion for cycling. So far I have been sucessful. I started riding alone more, and it gives me the ability to do what I want at the speed I want. Having to find the right rides for elevation detracts from my just riding for enjoyment.
Another consequence is that I have been extra tired lately. Part of this is from finishing up one career while I start the pursuit of another. Part of it is because I am putting in a lot more volume (ie numbers of hours exercised). But a big part of it is that doing a ride with elevation is much more taxing on my system. I can do it, but it definitely leaves me with less fuel in the tank for other things. . . like thinking clearly or staying awake past 9pm.
The last consequence is that it just doesn’t mean that much to me in this context. I wanted to accumulate 100,000 feet by climbing mountains. At the time I expected to do a tour that included five mountains (and probably 30,000 feet of elevation). I could get the same elevation riding hills, but it doesn’t speak to me in the same way.
So there you have it. Making my cycling goal of 4,000 miles by the end of the year is still going to be challenging. I have never cycled more than 3,300 miles in a year before. I started August with around 1,300 miles - so I have a lot of ground to cover these last four months.
If I hit 4,000 miles for the year; enjoy myself while I’m doing it; and lose weight/lower my blood pressure - then I’m more than happy to have dropped one of my goals.
