Walked on the trail with Bo and Lisa. Bo wouldn’t take no for an answer. We went a a slower dog smelling pace.

Walked Greenlake twice
Did a 5.6 mile walk to see where I stood relative to my Las Vegas Half Marathong goal. I finished in 1:21:34 or a 14.34 pace. That equates to a 3:10 half marathon.
The good news is that my stamina and cardio are not going to be limiting factors. I didn’t use my heart rate monitor, but I could have carried on a conversation fairly easily while I was walking.
The bad news is that my shins are going to be my limiting factor. I definitely felt them when I tried to go faster. I’m now thinking that the volume of stretching I do may actually be more important than the volume of walking I do.
Oh, and the dog was definitely not happy I went somewhere in my running shoes without him. He’s been sighing at me ever since I got back.

LVHM Goal - Beat Zappoman
When I signed up for the Sweat365 team training for the Las Vegas Half Marathon, I said that my goal was to finish the half marathon faster than Brad (aka Zappoman) runs the Las Vegas Marathon.
To be more precise on the goal - I have to walk the half marathon faster than Brad runs the marathon. The bet - nothing more than pure, unadulterated bragging rights. For those who don’t remember, Brad is the guy who rode his bike 126 miles, in the middle of the night and in the rain, in order to win a bet during last year’s ride to work month.
I really have two motivations for taking on this challenge. The first is that Brad’s goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. He needs to run a 3:16 in order to qualify. I know Brad can be slightly competitive. He responds when you poke him with a stick. If I can be the rabbit that helps him qualify for Boston, then great.
The second reason is that evidently I’m also competitive. Brad really doesn’t think I can beat him. Or said more precisely, Brad really doesn’t think I can walk that fast. I told Brad that I once walked a half marathon in 3:08, but that didn’t impress him. He wanted to know how long ago and what I weighed at the time. His point was that I was younger and lighter back then (translated: You’re older and fatter now).
So, what will it take for me to win? Well, Brad needs to run a 3:16 in order to qualify for Boston. For a half marathon, that translates into a 14:57 pace. I haven’t gone out and tested myself, but that seems very doable. Of course, Brad might actually run faster. So I am going to take this on like I have to beat 3:00. That translates to a 13:44 pace. That sounds fast for walking, but not impossible.
Other than beating Brad (rewarding in and of itself), I do have one other goal for myself. I want to see if I can start running again. I started run/walking in the spring, and I was really getting into it, but I did something to my calf. It still bothers me. I am going to put up the white flag and go to a PT and see if they can’t sort me out. I will probably walk until I’m finished with the LVHM, then start slowly building up running again. If things went really well, then I might start incorporating running in my training now, but just walk on the long run in order to prepare for the LVHM.
I’m heading out the door now. I’m going down to Greenlake (a flat 2.8 mile loop). I am going to walk it twice for time. It will give me a sanity check on where I’m at right now. I have no issues with distance for this event. After cycling season, I am more than trained to do something for more than three hours. Winning this will be all about the speed.
Look out Zappoman, I’m coming after you!!!
