Finally!!!

This is the sixth straight week I have cycled over 100 miles.  I am averaging almost two hours a day of exercise during that time (sounds like a lot, but most have come from what otherwise would have been my commute time in a car).

Yet I was up 5 pounds for all my effort.  It was driving me crazy.  I haven’t been impeccible with my diet, but I feel like I’ve been pretty good with it.  So why the weight gain?

At 46, there is no way I can attribute it to muscle.  Yes, I put on muscle more easily than the average bear.  But five pounds in six weeks by cycling - not happening.  More likely, it’s water retention from my body being under stress.  But it still was bugging me.

When I look in the mirror, I look leaner.  I feel stronger.  My clothes are looser.  So why the weight gain!!!

This morning I got on the scale, and four of the five pounds have magically gone away.   Yay!!!   I have no doubt that if I stick to the daily habits, my weight will continue to drop.

It just takes patience some times. . .

Trail walk with Bo

Even though it’s going to be in the mid 80’s today, there was a chill in the air on this walk.  Leaves are also starting to appear on the ground.  I can tell summer is nearing the end.

Bo had a great time as usual.  This was a pre-emptive strike to tire him out early.  I am working at home today, and I don’t want to hear a bunch of heavy sighing going on in the background.

My dog is annoying…

My dog has a new habit.  It started around six months ago.  I’ll be sitting around watching TV, or reading, or on the computer.  He’ll be laying by my side.  My trusty companion.  Studies show that dogs decrease blood pressure.  What could be better?

Not my dog.  Bo always wants to play.  It use to be that he would always pick up a tennis ball and drop it in my lap.  Then he would sit and stare at me.  Later he developed the habit of putting his head on my leg and looking pathetically at me.  Somehow having a dog staring at you while you are trying to relax is, well, not that relaxing.

Bo also lies.  One of us could have played with him or taken him on a walk.  Yet later on, he’ll go to someone new and swear that no one has ever played with him before.  He does the same thing with food.  He always tells us that no one has feed him.  Ever.

But that isn’t even his new habit.  Evidently I have become callously immune to his pathetic stares.  Now he is getting vocal.  I’ll be sitting around and Bo will be at my feet.  My faithful companion.  Except that every few minutes he will let out this long audible sigh.  Really loud.  Like life is weary.  Like he’s really bored, and it’s my fault.  Not even throwing the ball helps in these situations.  It’s a take me for a walk sigh.

This is a long way of saying that Lisa and I took Bo on a trail walk today.  It was mostly to shut him up…

Walked with Bo

Went on a trail walk with Bo, Lisa, and Natasha.

I was still tired from yesterday’s bike ride around Lake Washington.  Felt good to stretch my legs doing something easy.

Went on a long motorcycle ride with some friends afterwards.  It was a great way to spend a Saturday

Feeling tired

I got up this morning and was going to commute to work and back on my bicycle (which is 36 miles, 2,100 feet of elevation gain).  But I feel really tired, so I don’t think I will.

Yesterday I walked at lunch and in the evening I did an hour on the spin bike.  That shouldn’t leave me feeling tired.  So I went back and looked at my logbook, and I have worked out 12 days in a row.  The streak started with the Courage Classic and the three mountain passes.  Since then I haven’t missed a day where I’ve at least walked.  Most days I have cycled.

At the beginning of the year I worked out 40 straight days.  I am not going to make a commitment around it, but I do get motivated by seeing these streaks grow.  It’s nice to have 12 days without even noticing it.  In a couple of days it will be two weeks.  I’ll take it from there.

Last time, when I did the 40 straight days, I also had my most consistent weight loss.  My weight has been stuck between 220 and 225 for a couple of months now.  Maybe this is what I need to regain some momentum.

I’m excited.  If my goal for the rest of the year is going to be primarily about consistency, it’s nice to see I’ve been, well, consistent.
