Walked Greenlake with a friend
Caught up with an old co-worker I haven’t seen in about 5 years. Since I last saw her, she has become a marathoner, a triathlete, and a monster cyclist. Oh - and she can walk FAST!!! I was pushing it to keep up, and I sensed that she was taking it easy on me.
It was great seeing her, I am looking forward to her joining our community so I can stay in better touch.

I’m over 400 miles walking for the year
Went on a neighborhood walk with Mark. The walk put me over 400 miles walking this year. This wasn’t a goal that I had, it just turned out that I really enjoyed walking this year.
It makes up in part for the fact that I only cycled 2,100 miles this year. This year I never really got my cycling mojo for whatever reason. I think I have been too focused on cycling the last few years, and evidently my body was ready for something different.

Lifted with Mark
Lifted weights for total body. Did 26 sets of 12 reps. Used about 75% of my normal weight.
This is only my second time lifting since starting up again. Still haven’t found the zone, but it was better today. When I’m in the lifting zone, I only think about the set I’m on (vs letting my mind wander and think about how much I have left to do).

Walk Edmonds Waterfront
I had Lisa drop me off at the Edmonds waterfront (on the Puget Sound), and I walked home. It’s 4.5 miles, but it has 600 feet of elevation gain, most of it coming in one hill.
It was a cold, windy day. Once I hit the hill, I warmed up. It is a fun walk; because it’s a walk I don’t do all the time, because downtown Edmonds is fun to walk through, and because I love seeing the water.

Lifted Weights
This was my first time lifting since spring. I went ultra light on the weights because I know I am going to be sore tomorrow no matter what weight I use for the exercises.
I did upper body. 4 sets of 12 for each body part.

Walk around neighborhood
I thought today would be an easy walk, but it didn’t turn out that way. First I had to drop my car off to get new tires, and since it’s not that far from my house, it seemed easier to just walk home and wait for it to be ready rather than take a shuttle.
Then Mark stopped by, and I ended up going on a walk with him as well. By the time everything was said and done, I had put in 8.6 miles today. I am still feeling it a bit from the Las Vegas Half Marathon, but it’s nice to know I am now in shape to walk as much as I want without it bothering me much.
Now that I have such a good base, it’s time to start upping the aerobic intensity.

Las Vegas Half Marathon
I finished walking the Las Vegas Half Marathon in 3:04:06. It was a PR for me as far as walking a half marathon goes, beating my old PR of 3:08. The pace average was 14:03, faster than I had walked any of my practice walks.
I actually had multiple goals that I was shooting for. My first goal was to finish in under 3:15 (the time Brad needed to qualify for Boston). My second goal was to beat Brad, whatever his time. My third goal was to beat 3:08 (which is the fastest I have ever walked a half marathon), and my highest goal was to finish in under 3 hours.
I hit all but the last goal. When I replay the half marathon in my mind, I just don’t see how I could have saved those four minutes. I did take a bio-pit stop at mile four, but I don’t think I would have wanted to go two more hours without stopping. The rest of the time, I was going as fast as I could. Oh well, it would have been nice, but I know I gave it my all.
For those of you that don’t know, my Las Vegas Half Marathon started as a bet. Brad, who is trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon, was going to run the Las Vegas marathon. He needs a time of 3:15 to qualify for Boston. I think I mentioned something about having walked a half marathon once in 3:08, and Brad was skeptical - first about my having actually walked a half that fast, then about whether or not I could do it again since I was “younger” and “lighter” back then. I don’t remember exactly how the conversation got started, but I do remember the result. The bet was on!!!
The bet was simple. Brad bet me I couldn’t walk a half marathon faster than he could run the marathon. And I couldn’t run any of it.
I was really worried about the new fangled chip technology they used - throw away chips. There were about 18,000 participants, and I started near the back. It took me 17 minutes to get to the start line. I envisioned in my head the chip not working, and me telling Brad I actually finished 17 minutes faster than the clock time - to no avail! But the chip worked great, and my time was logged.
Brad also set a PR for this run, but missed the time needed for Boston. My preference would have been for Brad to qualify for Boston and still lose to me - then I would have really rubbed it in. But Brad gave his all and came up a little short. It was still a great effort on his part, and I’m sure he will qualify for Boston in time.
Thanks to all of you who have been cheering me on the last few months. It was a fun challenge, and I am definitely in walking shape now. Now if there was only something constructive I could do with good walking shape…

Walk around Las Vegas
Walked around town early. Spent the afternoon resting my legs. Feeling good. The arthritis in my ankles have been acting up a bit, but overall I feel ready.
